One of the phenomena that compells me to keep photographing the night sky is the aurora, also known as the Northern Lights or aurora borealis. I love looking to the north and seeing the waving, flickering, dancing light in an otherwise dark and starry sky! Even better, what looks like gray, slightly green or pink light to the naked eye, can actually be glorious blues, greens, reds, pinks and purples when captured by a digital camera sensor. Though there are plenty of websites and applications that help to predict when and where the aurora may appear, I still feel the wonder and awe of a child who has been surprised by a fantastic fireworks display when I'm able to photograph the northern lights.
